Coachella 2015: Kimbra, full-throttle charm

Kimbra

Who: Kimbra in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: KCRW Kiwi
Memorable Because: If you played the last 10 years of Morning Becomes Eclectic Broadcasts simultaneously at moderate volume, it might sound something like Kimbra’s charming afternoon set, so chock-full of references and borrowings from the pleasant sounds of yesteryear (soul, jazz, R&B, lounge, you know …) that the seams were impossible to detect. But if garage bands get to rehash and relive the past to the approving tweets of music snobs, why not pop queens? Kimbra had it all — except the top-flight backing band, top-notch songs and top-dollar spectacle her obvious talent deserves. Still a good time. Gorgeous vocals. “Miracle” should be a hit.
