Ears Wide Open: Post Malone

Los Angeles-via-Dallas artist Post Malone is relatively unknown at this point, with the Internet largely void of his backstory, and only a few songs to his credit — however, those few songs are great. His track “White Iverson” has logged over half a million listens in the last few weeks, Malone half-crooning and half-rapping with sedated swagger over a atmospheric and minimal beat of synth tones and hi-hat stutters from the Atlanta production duo FKi, dropping Iverson-referencing lines like, “F*ck practice, this sh*t just happens, know y’all can’t stand it / I have it, I’ll never pass it, I wear my magic,” and the catchy hook, “White Iverson / When I started ballin’ I was young / You gon’ think about me when I’m gone / I need that money like the ring I never won, I won,” effectively switching up his flow throughout with ease. FKi also crafted “That’s It,” a similarly laid-back number that morphs samples over swirling production, reminiscent of the narcotized purple vibe in The Weeknd’s first mixtapes as Malone waxes poetic about drugs, pills, and women. So far, Post Malone is perfect from the floor.
