Ears Wide Open: The Tulips

The dreamy psychedelic folk of the Tulips (not to be confused with TÜLIPS) seems perfect for slow drives home through deserted streets in the wee hours. The sextet — Jared Robert Petrich, Dana Rogge, Corey James Gash, Adam Halferty, Nick Price and Jonathan Snyder — releases its sophomore album “Echo Blue” on Jan. 27, and it expands substantially on the more stripped-down ambiance of 2011’s “Mother Universe.” That first release, an homage to the naturalist John Muir, showcased Petrich and Rogge as a duo, but “Echo Blue” gives a bigger voice to Petrich’s contemplative songs, with moody harmonies and keyboards. The single “Scorpio Moon” exudes the animal magnetism that the astrological reference suggests; “Winter Winds” drafts on an icy backbeat as Petrich sings, “If I sound a little insecure / I only wish I could give you more.”
