Orange County native Jake McMullen fronted the Americana outfit York in 2012 and last year went on his own, releasing an EP in collaboration with fellow Orange Countian Ellex Bree. The latter was recorded in Nashville, and this year, McMullen, 21, relocated to Music City USA to further his songwriting exploits. Last week he unveiled the first release from his new home base, the single “Always.” It’s a solemn, dusky and ultimately gorgeous meditation reminiscent of songwriters such as Robert Francis and Ed Harcourt. In the premiere on No Country for New Nashville, McMullen said the song sprang from the trepidation he felt regarding his big move, “specifically the ambiguity of the decision and how it relates to the future, paired with being alone.”
