After teaming up last year to release the collaborative album “Run The Jewels,” rapping duo El-P and Killer Mike are back with their appropriately titled follow-up “Run The Jewels 2” as a free download. It’s another high-energy assault of hard, fast and fun rap, as Jaime and Mikey go tit-for-tat verbally with eloquent and intricate rhymes, both furious and playful, built on a bed of El-P’s explosive production. “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry” sounds like a raging alarm, with El-P spitting, “F*ck the world, don’t ask me for sh*t, that’s word to B.I.G / I dreamt we owned the world, but I’ve woken up and it don’t exist / Soak it in and need no assist / You can’t slap my wrist, I don’t owe you sh*t,” whereas “Early” tackles police brutality, with Mike rapping, “And I apologize if it seems like I got out of line, sir / Cause I respect the badge and the gun / And I pray today ain’t the day that you drag me away / Right in front of my beautiful son.” The 11-track album also features contributions of Travis Barker, BOOTS, Zack de la Rocha, Gangsta Boo and Trackstar the DJ, and easily ranks among one of the best hip-hop albums this year. It’s just like El-P says on the track “Jeopardy” – “Run the Jewels is the answer, your question is ‘what’s poppin’?'”
