Ears Wide Open: Girlpool

No percussion. No boys. L.A. duo Girlpool, composed of members Cleo Tucker (guitar) and Harmony Tividad (bass), write garage-rock that is simple as it gets, especially considering the fact they met at the Smell, one of L.A.’s noisiest DIY venues. Their new single “Blah Blah Blah” consists of lyrics your 7-year-old niece can remember (and probably sing just as well), but the hook is there and available to get stuck in anyone’s heads no matter one’s age. “Jane,” once again demonstrates bright, childlike vocals (and piercing tantrum screams), but the bluesy harmonies between guitar and bass successfully drive the song despite the lack of a drummer. Think of a heavily sedated Bleached and you’ve got Girlpool. There’s not much, but there’s just enough to like. It’s honest, vulnerable and perhaps a better version of “girl power” then all the lavish promotion Spice Girls could have ever conjured. Girlpool’s self-titled debut EP is slated for a Nov. 18 release via Wichita Recordings.
