Video premiere: Ranger, ‘Promises’

Last year, Nicole Vaughn’s sweet folk ballad “Promises” perked our ears up and had us take notice of her two-part album “Songs for Leaving | Songs for Other Things.” As the first release under the moniker Ranger, it showcased the multi-instrumentalist’s big-hearted pop-Americana, brooding and contemplative one minute, optimistic and rollicking the next. The black-and-white clip directed by Nolan Goff strikes a perfect balance between the intimacy and its strong-headed message. Vaughn, dressed in mostly in white, adamantly sings her story to the camera in the dark but walks immediately after it’s done. A follow-up to Ranger’s debut records is in the works.
