As the production mastermind behind The xx, Jamie Smith, better known as Jamie xx, has expanded his production skills beyond simply the band in the last few years. He has remixed songs from Adele, Holly Miranda, and Radiohead, to name a few, as well as 2011’s “We’re New Here,” a remix album featuring re-worked tracks from Gil Scott-Heron’s “I’m New Here” sessions. So far this year, he has released three singles, “All Under One Roof Raving” and the double A-side “Girl / Sleep Sound,” on Young Turks. While homesick on the road with the xx, he created “All Under One Roof Raving” to, in his words, “play out back home as I knew the year to come would be spent largely in the UK, DJing and making my own album,” and it “serves as a reminder, not to take any time for granted at home or away.” It samples Mark Leckey’s 1999 video “Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore,” featuring young folk grooving from the ’70s disco scene to the ’90s rave scene, over his signature steel drum percussion and upbeat electronic rhythms. “Girl” utilizes a sample from Freeez’s 1982 track “I.O.U.” but wraps it into near obscurity over synth layers and percussion, with a club-ready chillwave sound.
