Ears Wide Open: Phoebe Bridgers

phoebebridgers-juliehubbardculpNineteen-year-old folk singer Phoebe Bridgers saw her already-rising profile spike this spring when she appeared in an iPhone commercial covering the Pixies’ “Gigantic.” Those who knew her for acoustic gems such as “Waiting Game” might have been surprised to see her channel her inner Kim Deal (everybody has one of those, right?), but her EP “Killer,” released in late March and available on a name-your-price basis, reveals the singer-guitarist as both an evocative storyteller (“Chelsea” and “Georgia”) and rocker (“Whatever” and “Turned Around”). Bridgers’ is a young voice doing sophisticate’s work, as is further evidenced by the cover songs she tackles. Speaking of which: This week Bridgers released a free download of “Brain Dead,” a song penned by her sometimes-collaborator Charlie Hickey, who is 14 years old. It’s … well, wow.
