J. Dende
Joshua Crampton may look familiar if you’ve been a fan of his work in other L.A. bands Luna Is Honey and Batwings Catwings. Considering the fact that those two acts are still hard at work (Batwings Catwings is currently in the studio working on a new record and Luna Is Honey is doing the same for two new releases), it’s impressive to learn that Crampton has also had time to record solo material under the moniker J. Dendê. Unlike the pop influences in Luna Is Honey or the garage-punk of Batwings Catwings, J. Dendê’s sound palette lies on a foundation of funky beats and synths. Crampton’s previously released “Brunette OST Vol. 1,” which served as a soundtrack to his comic of the same name. Crampton is now preparing for the release of the second “Brunette” comic (via Petty Cash Comix) and “Brunette OST Vol. 2” (via Higher Life) in July. The record will be released digitally and on limited cassette and include “Brunette OST Vol. 1” plus bonus tracks. J. Dendê collaborates with a number of vocalists on the new album including Deija Marie (who plays live with Dendê), JBTS and more. “Bounce Back, ” the first single from “Vol. 2” is a smooth ride featuring back-and-forth vocals between Crampton and Alina Bea (Alina Cutrono, ex-Body Parts). It’s a perfect track for Monday morning.
