Ears Wide Open: The Acetates

Acetates

The loose, lo-fi rock ā€™nā€™ roll of L.A. quintet the Acetates recalls the days before fancy recording techniques smoothed out all the rough edges in folk and blues music. The fivesome of Simon Elbaum, Oren Klein, Nick Wheaton, Brian Morales and Brian Cannady have no problem with frayed edges; the rough-and-tumble feel of their early singles “Hey Sister,” with its tooting sax, and “Self Portrait,” with its slippery harmonica, could have oozed out of VW vans during the Summer of Love. The band has more material in the works, tunes fans are sure to hear at their residency this month.
