Like Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee, Sharon Van Etten is one of those artists who cuts deep to the bone with her lyrics and melodies. But despite the pain, the catharsis has always been Van Etten’s strength. Preparing to release her fourth studio album – titled “Are We There” – the Brooklyn singer-songwriter shares “Every Time the Sun Comes Up,” another slow-burning ballad that is full of pathos as much as it is full of bitterness. Lyrics like “Every time the sun comes up / I’m in trouble” and elongated phrases like “I washed your dishes / but I shit in your bathroom” remind one that Van Etten is not helpless. She’s always stronger in the end, and there’s no doubt that this forthcoming album will yet again reflect the bold new skin that shines more with each layer she sheds. “Are We There” is slated for a May 27 release via Jagjaguwar.
