Nikki Lane is not to be trifled with. The Nashville-based singer [one of our highlights this past March at SXSW] is one of the most compelling emerging talents in country music right now – a seductress one minute and an objector with a conscience the next, equally capable of a turning a phrase or wilting candor. Lane’s retro-twang sound has a rocker’s spine, and some of the hooks to match; her sophomore album “All or Nothin'” was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, whom she met after moving from L.A. to Nashville. The album comes out next week on New West [it’s streaming on NPR], and it’s evidence that the onetime high-school dropout has learned a lesson or two from the Book of Love, which another songwriter once wearily described as “long and boring.” Not here.
