From the beginning, Trapdoor Social has been about science. Collaborators Skylar Funk and Merritt Graves met while studying environmental sciences at Pomona College and, along with making buoyant indie-pop tunes, have made the campaign for renewable energy part of their platform. They take both efforts to a new level on their “Science of Love” EP (due May 20), the follow-up to 2012’s “Death of a Friend.” Trapdoor Social is donating all of the new EP’s proceeds to Homebody Industries so that the downtown L.A. nonprofit can install solar energy panels at its headquarters. (In fact, the EP’s presale campaign has already achieved that goal.) Now, about the science of engineering a pop song: Funk and Graves do a nifty job on the title track, a propulsive emo-pop number with a sky-high chorus. Dare we call it sunny?
