Who: Courtney Barnett in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Rollicking good time
Memorable Because: Tie-dyed T-shirt, neon green socks, shaggy hair, nonchalant stare into the crowd and one very sharp tongue: These are a few of my favorite things about Courtney Barnett at her midafternoon set in the Gobi Tent. The Australian singer-songwriter didn’t say much during her set, but her lyrics and guitar work spoke to the crowd – which started out small but filled up nicely by the end, by the way. Barnett was matter-of-fact as could be and her Velvet Underground-like song structures were easy-going yet scrappy at times. The moment that beautifully tied it altogether was when she played “Avant Gardener” and sang those golden lyrics: “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cos I play guitar / I think she’s clever cos she stops people dying.”
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At STRFKR: I saw five electro acts later this day. Courtney Barnett was my early salvation.
