Wye Oak

It’s a bit odd to hear a “guitar-less” Wye Oak song, since the instrument was half of vocalist Jenn Wasner’s arsenal from the beginning. Yet, sounds evolve and what we have from Wasner and drummer Andy Stack are two new synth-pop songs. Now, if you know anything abut BBLA, we’ve heard our share of synth-pop duos, but Wye Oak’s arrangements are still a cut above most bands of a similar format. There’s no doubt that Wasner’s recent R&B-pop collaboration with Jon Ehren (Art Department, White Life) as Dungeonesse has trickled into some of Wye Oak’s new tracks such as the first official single “Glory” and teaser single “The Tower,” and that’s all right. Let’s face it; you couldn’t exactly dance to “I Hope You Die,” and “Glory” may be the complete sonic opposite of “Holy, Holy,” but Wasner’s lyrics are still poignant as ever. Wye Oak’s forthcoming album “Shriek” is slated for an April 29 release on Merge.
