Ears Wide Open: Hong Hong Kong Kong

The Submarines might be on the rocks, but there’s still music flowing from the duo of Blake Hazard (who released a solo album last year) and John Dragonetti. The latter is prepping an EP, due March 11, under the name … take a deep breath here … Hong Hong Kong Kong. Hey, at least it has vowels. “It’s a totally obnoxious name,” Dragonetti concedes.  “I was out with a good friend who happens to be a radio DJ and we were making fun of band names. I decided that I wanted a name for this project that would make him want to strangle me for having to say it on air.” All in good fun, we suppose, and the same could be said of the four songs on the EP. Dragonetti, who’s also spent his post-Submarines time producing and scoring films (including the hacker documentary “We Are Legion: The Story of The Hacktivists” and a film about Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz, “The Internet’s Own Boy”), is romping and stomping all over this new EP, his hooky songs clamoring with buzzing guitars and synths and sundry effects. Giddy giddy, contagious contagious.
