Ears Wide Open: Kiven

L.A. quartet Kiven is one of several bands around town making the hopeful claim that rock is back. And even though the quartet of singer-guitarist-keyboardist Tyler Demorest, guitarist Danny Schnair, bassist Matt Cohen and drummer Jake Reed may not exactly on the vanguard, rockists may find some tasty licks on Kiven’s self-titled album, which comes out next Tuesday. Produced by At the Drive-In’s Tony Hajjar, the album mixes bluesy bombast (the single “In the Fire”), almost-mathy rockers (“Come and Go”) and keys-soaked, ’80s-inspired dance-rock (“Living for the Alarm”). Demorest’s versatile tenor carries the day, no matter what divergent paths the songs take.
