Video: Marissa Nadler, ‘Dead City Emily’

Somewhere between Chelsea Wolfe and Lana Del Rey lives Marissa Nadler, calmly resting in the shadows. After nearly swearing off music entirely, the Boston-based songwriter found herself back in the studio last year on a serendipitous whim. Her sixth album, “July,” released this week via Sacred Bones Records, is directional, complex and a gentle vision of country folk. The leading single, “Dead City Emily” is a delicate six-minute affair, a siren’s song luring the most fragile of hearts. Nadler’s storytelling is done in euphoric harmonies that are intentionally feminine and independent while her confidence has reinforced the haunting endearment she crafts so well. Despite the leisurely tempo, this chorus will stick with you long after the song is over.
