Ears Wide Open: Dreamland

During a four-plus-year run in the band War Tapes, Neil Popkin traded in dark, brooding rock influenced by the ’80s post-punk greats. With War Tapes on haitus, Popkin is getting out in the sunshine more, if the early songs from his new project Dreamland are any indication. The trio – Popkin, Andrea Wasse and Pablo Amador – calls its new music “surfgaze” and true to the band’s name its songs are dreamy and catchy and even a little bit beach-y. Surf’s up, eyes down.

It sounds a bit like the pre War Tapes stuff, before the band changed their name from “The Popkids”. I always liked the contrast between Neils voice and lyrics, and the poppy melodies and guitar hooks.
Agree with Joel.. some of PopKids are heard hear but music and lyrics reflect a few years of life’s trials and tribulations. This music is full of love and hope. Please more, more.
