Ears Wide Open: D.A.

If lines on the resumé were hits, D.A. Wallach would be platinum. Wallach is the Harvard-educated whiz kid who with schoolmate Maxwell Drummey released two albums as Chester French, which, despite an estimable pile of press clippings, combined to sell about 23,000 copies (the second, barely a thousand). Which is all right if you count the likes of Kanye West and Pharrell Williams among your friends, are skilled enough to co-write with a host of other luminaries and are savvy enough to be on the cutting edge of social media. Forbes recognized him a couple years ago; he’s been an advisor to and artist-in-residence at Spotify; and he recently joined another high-profile media marketing company. Which brings us to the L.A.-based songwriter’s new solo material, which he’s undertaking under the moniker D.A. Darned if the new song “Glowing” (the video was directed by social-media button-pusher Tyler, the Creator) doesn’t sound affectionately like stripped-down ELO. Darned if the new song “Farm” doesn’t rewind to 1971 Elton John. Darned if D.A. hasn’t joined the increasingly eclectic roster of resurgent Harvest Records. Enjoy.
