Stream: PAWS, ‘Jellyfish’

6012Scottish trio PAWS would feel right at home in Los Angeles’ garage-pop scene – their debut full-length “Cokefloat!” (which came out last fall on the Brighton/Brooklyn label FatCat Records) is full of fizzy, catchy guitar missiles that seem the perfect soundtrack to skating or moshing or both, all of which make them the perfect companion for your Ty Segall- and FIDLAR-dominated mixtapes. The threesome – Phillip Taylor, Josh Swinney and Ryan Drever, the latter having replaced Matthew Scott this past spring – got some attention at SXSW this year and even caught the ear of Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, who included PAWS on his monstrous “best songs” Spotify playlist. The trio has been in New York recording its second album (and Taylor taking time out to do an acoustic cover of Elliott Smith’s “Needle in the Hay”), and hits L.A. on tour next week. For a second we thought “Jellyfish” might be an homage to the power-pop greats, but, alas, it’s about a gelatinous significant other. Rage on anyhow.
