Video: Deep Cotton, ‘We’re Far Enough From Heaven Now We Can Freak Out’

Coming from two of Janelle Monae’s collaborators, the music of Deep Cotton is, not surprisingly, rather giddily all over the map – eccentric pop and punk and funk with a defiant sensibility even as it smilingly skips down the road toward musical comedy. It’s the work of Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder, who with Monae co-founded the Wondaland Arts Society collective. Deep Cotton recently released “Fixtape” as a free download and this week unveiled the video for “We’re Far Enough From Heaven Now We Can Freak Out.” In the mini-drama (wink), a group of women known as the Scum Warriors – bent on destroying all males – capture Wonder and Lightning, who have to improvise to save their lives. “Who can cook? / Who can clean? / Who will paint the fence?” Indeed, have some fun with this one, and check out the Talking Heads-meets-TV on the Radio single “Runaway Radio.”
