Not only are some of the landscapes beautiful in the (rather hodgepodge but trippy) video for Jonathan Wilson’s “Dear Friend,” but owing to the singer-guitarist’s remarkable solos and production, the song creates soundscapes to match. In seven-plus minutes, “Dear Friend” evokes the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Neil Young without plundering any of them – Wilson continues to be at the forefront of the psychedelic folk revivalism without sounding like a revivalist. Wilson’s sophomore album “Fanfare” will be released on Oct. 15 and, to itemize from our August post, boasts a roster of contributors including Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty), Wilco’s Patrick Sansone, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, Roy Harper and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. “Dear Friend” sounds like a lot of old friends in a way (like his 2001 debut “Gentle Spirit”) that makes you want to make Wilson a new friend.
