Ears Wide Open: Echosmith

That certain trio of sisters isn’t the only family band making noise in L.A. right now. Echosmith’s debut “Talking Dreams” comes out next week, and anybody unsure that what people are calling “indie-pop” is this era’s pop-punk need look no further than this album. Convenient labels aside, “Talking Dreams” is unfailingly catchy and produced (by Mike Elizondo) with admirable restraint, offering a dozen four-minute Starbursts that seem lab-tested for today’s tastes: big choruses, dreamy dynamics, a wide-eyed, youthful sense of yearning. The latter quality comes courtesy of the Sierota siblings, all of whom look like they should be hanging out in the parental pick-up zone at Warped Tour (on which the quartet paid its dues this summer). The Sierotas – singer-guitarist Jamie, singer-keyboardist Sydney, singer-bassist Noah and drummer Graham – showed at a couple recent gigs (Lobsterfest, Tarfest) that they can win a crowd in five minutes or less. Shout-along if you must.
