Ears Wide Open: Owl Fly South

If your music collection if filled with jangly rock bands who favor pop sounds from the ’60s and ’70s, then UCLA-based quartet Owl Fly South may be a welcome addition. Braeden Henderson (Torches), Oliver Dobrian, Jake Stein and Baxter Bailey write with a garage-rock foundation, but the shifts in one single song range anywhere from psychedelia to pop to classic rock. Vocals are drenched in reverb for those who love their lyrics a bit hazy, but the percussion, keys and guitars coalesce and stay as thick as crystallized honey. Henderson’s baritone soars over staccato keyboard chords in “Castles” and his vocals in “Blink” flow in a manner that is groovy as the bass lines. Here’s to the kids in school.

THANK YOU for writing about Owl Fly South! They are far & away my favorite new band.. It’s nice to read someone else thinks they are as amazing as I do. Plus after hearing their new songs at The Satellite on Saturday – I was blown away all over again. If you liked Castle & Blink, you gotta check out the newer stuff.
