Folk singer Jake Smith has been holding audiences rapt as the White Buffalo for nearly a decade. Blessed with a messianic presence and a baritone that seems to originate from the back of a dusty 19th-century saloon, the Orange County-bred songwriter wrestles with all the demons and angels of traditional country music, weaving good, evil and the gray areas in between into the conflicted characters of his stories. The White Buffalo’s new album “Shadows, Greys & Evil Ways” (out today via Unison Music) tells the ”Ž tale of star-crossed lovers Joe and Jolene. The album was produced by the Grammy-nominated duo of Bruce Witkin and Ryan Dorn and features Smith joined by bassist Tom Andrews and drummer Matt Lynott, with cameos by the legendary drummer Jim Keltner (on “Don’t You Want It”) and string player Jessy Greene (the Jayhawks). The White Buffalo has also seen six of his songs appear on TV’s “Sons of Anarchy,” including, recently, “Joey White.”
