Jagwar Ma

Baggy jeans may be out but baggy beats are still in, as Australian psych-pop band Jagwar Ma are here to remind you. Their debut album “Howlin'” includes 12 tasty tracks that could cater to fans of Tame Impala, Perry Farrell and the Stone Roses and bring back the hype of Madchester scene where the lines between psychedelia rock and acid house are blurred. But to call the music of producer Jona Ma and singer Gabriel Winterfield “dance-rock” would only be scratching the surface. The beginning of songs like “The Throw” start off guitar-heavy but quickly transform into something more rave-friendly, while songs like “Come Save Me” are ’60s-pop nuggets recalling melodies by the Beach Boys, and others like “Man I Need” turn up the psychotropic elements. Whether it sounds like a DJ is dropping a beat or dudes like Austin Powers and his go-go dancers have something a little more contemporary to strut to, there isn’t a single track on this debut that sounds forced. “Howlin'” is out now via Mom + Pop.
