Who: Jessie Ware in the Mojave Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Fans on fans.
Memorable Because: The largest crowd of the day in this tent belonged to U.K.’s Jessie Ware, and scattered among the audience were hand fans promoting her U.S. debut “Devotion.” After the entire Mojave crowd roared during the opening funky beats in “Still Love Me,” Ware made sure to ask “Did you all get your fans? It’s so hot right now!” Bubbly as ever, the Mercury Prize-nominated R&B/pop singer waved to her human fans (she even singled one of them out and cried, “You’re everywhere!” and wished one of her Twitter followers a happy birthday) and wasted no time by going straight into hits such as “Night Light” and “If You’re Never Gonna Move.” By the time her set had gotten to “Sweet Talk,” Ware told her audience “You should all be kissing by now!” Whether fans followed her suggestion or not, it was obvious that her vocal stylings (and charm) were smooth enough to convert everyone into devotees.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at the Gaslight Anthem: In this case, R&B > rock.
