Coachella 2013: Dam-Funk, getting us in a groove

Who: Dam-Funk on the main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Funky happy people.
Memorable Because: It takes some gnarly keyboard manipulation into fooling you there is a guitar on stage when there’s not, but funk maestro Dam-Funk had a groove that was twice as heavy as his light crowd. Although, paired with positive messages in songs like “OBE (Out of Body Experience)” and “Mirrors,” it didn’t take long for his “funkster” count to double among the faithful, who shook their rumps in the blazing heat. Because when Dam-Funk asks you to bounce, you bounce – not because you have to, but your body simply cannot refuse. Also, that man with fuchsia-colored hair on stage wasn’t a hologram. Ariel Pink came out as a special guest to sing their cover of Donnie and Joe Emerson’s “Baby,” which made for a nice slow R&B moment in the midst of high-energy funk. Haunted Graffiti’s Tim Koh also came out to play bass. Free swag was thrown out into the audience a couple of songs before Dam-Funk wrapped up, which made me take note: T-shirts are less scary than the jewel-case CDs that were suddenly falling from the sky.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Beardyman: Sure; he can rap, but can he funk?
