Beat-scene goddess Jennifer Lee, aka TOKiMONSTA, made her mark on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, her nimble production and oh-so-cool textures stretching boundaries in a world they’re already elastic. She steps up to Ultra Music for her new release “Half Shadows” (due April 9), which features collaborations with rapper Kool Keith, L.A. songstress Gavin Turek (April’s Monday night resident at the Bootleg Bar), Ninja Tune singer Andreya Triana and soul singer Jesse Boykins III. And the single “Go With It,” which came out in February, boasts the vocals of Amanda Warner of NYC synth-pop duo MNDR. Compared to most TOKiMONSTA tracks, it’s a pretty straight-ahead tune – even if the the video, directed by the High5Collective and starring Hollywood marketing guy Bo Burroughs, isn’t. Somewhere here a player is getting played.
