Ears Wide Open: Only You

Most music fans may know Rachel Fannan from San Francisco band Sleepy Sun, and if you’ve recently seen the Fresh & Onlys, you’ll recognize her as their keyboardist. But Fannan’s always been writing music on her own, and now we see the fruits of her solo labor under the moniker Only You. With the help of Micayla Grace of Leopold & His Fiction, the L.A.-based singer-songwriter has released the 7-inch single “Applying Myself” through White Iris Records (with “Love Is Making Me Tired” as the b-side), and it’s a charming combination of ’50s pop melodies, sweet harmonies, and surf-pop guitar chords. The vocals delivered with a Chrissy Hynde tenacity carry lyrics like “Oh, I can’t feel anything” throughout its strong hook, but it’s hard to tell whether Only You will produce mainstream karaoke hits in the future. That won’t stop us from rocking private karaoke sessions like Fannan does in the Ellis Bahl-directed clip above, though. File next to Dum Dum Girls.
