Stream: Daughter, ‘Run’

1

Laura Marling fans may appreciate Daughter, the London trio whose members consist of vocalist/guitarist Elena Tonra, electric guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella. Originally the solo work of Tonra, Daughter’s small batch of available music is also somber folk-pop with dark undertones. There are as many lyrics about deaths are there are about dreams but the melodies soar above the minimalism, and despite the wispy and haunting elements on their EPs, “His Young Heart” and “The Wild Youth,” the trio doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In anticipation of their forthcoming full-length debut on 4AD, they’ve released the ethereal “Smother” single and its equally beautiful b-side “Run,” which have fans comparing it to the raw original demo. Both versions are captivating, if you ask me. You can’t go wrong with opening lyrics like “While I powder my nose / He will powder his guns.”
