Ears Wide Open: Liphemra

1

For L.A. show-goers, Liv Marsico is a familiar face, even if she’s behind a drum kit most of the time. Her resumé is stacked; it boasts her percussion duties for several local bands, including Stone Darling, and, most recently, drumming in Gothic Tropic and providing additional vocals for Tapioca & the Flea. As Liphemra, she has finally stepped out on her own. Drawing the name from the concept of “ephemera,” Marsico’s solo project is an appropriate amalgam of mysteriously ambient swirls with songs like the haunting yet pulsating “Young.” Although electronic-based, the multi-instrumentalist in her also embodies elements of gothic, psychedelic rock and jazz for a textured cushion underneath her bright vocals. Liphemra’s experimental direction isn’t too shocking considering her past rhythmic explorations with others, but it’s certainly an enticing listen.
