Video: Simone White, ‘In the Water Where the City Ends’

Folk singer-songwriter Simone White has always had a keen sense of storytelling. Her folk/country-tinged 2007 debut, “I Am the Man” and 2009’s quiet offering “Yakiimo” gently pierced listeners with a soft synthesis of intimacy and intelligence. But come May 7, the White will no longer be defined by only her wispy vocals, when “Silver Silver” is released on Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon’s label. The new record still maintains White’s sharp wit, but it also showcases something new – collaborations with the many new friends she’s made along the way during the process of recording it. Collaborating with artists she met on tour, such as Andrew Bird, Thao Nguyen and Victoria Williams, White breaks free of the introvert frames she’s been comfortable in during the past. Samuel Bing and Julian Wass of Fol Chen are also at the production helm. White’s video for “In the Water Where the City Ends” features animation by Hideyuki Katsumata to illustrate her song about 2011’s devastating Japanese tsunami. It’s subtle yet poignant, another combination White continues to master.
