Ears Wide Open: Marriages

Like so many do in the L.A. music scene, Emma Ruth Rundle and David Clifford of post-rock quintet Red Sparowes are working double time by starting up yet another band. (So, this makes it triple time.) Rundle and Clifford also have the Nocturnes, and on the new project Marriages they are joined by fellow Red Sparowes band member Greg Burns on bass and synthesizer. Whereas the Nocturnes offered ethereal folk with a backbone on “Aokigahara,” Marriages’ forthcoming album “Kitsune” has a tougher skin. But that certainly doesn’t mean the raw strength of songs like “Ten Tiny Fingers” come without a tidal wave of beauty. Here, they burn with more of an experimental fire and play between light and shadows. It’s just as hypnotizing, if not moreso. Produced by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Tool), “Kitsune” is slated for a May 1 release via Sargent House.
