Premiere: Death to Anders, ‘Two Chords’

1

It’s been three years since Death to Anders released “Fictitious Business,” an album steeped in Sonic Youth indie rock and Silver Lake youth attitude. While the neighborhood has bloomed with bands hawking other fashions – syrupy synth-pop, retro garage-rock, flannel-clad folk – the L.A. triumvirate of Robs has minded its original business. Singer-guitarist Rob Danson, bassist Rob Hume and drummer Robert Smith wield guitar licks, rhythms and lyrical barbs like garden tools, scraping away the weeds in search of fertile soil. Their forthcoming “Don’t Give Up” EP has every bit of the insistence its title implies, and a chewier melodic center than its predecessor, even if endearingly wobbly vocalist Danson only sometimes circles it. And in case you doubt D2A’s commitment to keep the indie-rock flame burning, the EP will be sold as a digital download affixed to the back of a handmade glass candle.
