Ears Wide Open: Pebs

Jon Pebsworth has been known as “Pebs” since he was a kid, and it’s this moniker he chose for his newest incarnation as a scratchy-voiced troubadour. As he shows on his debut album “Sweet Surrender” (out independently Sept. 20), it’s a role he inhabits well – he has logged plenty of miles as vocalist for SoCal ska-punkers Buck-O-Nine (and plenty of hours behind a desk as publicist for SideOneDummy Records). His twangy and tangy Americana, made with an assist from ex-Royal Crown Revue guitarist James Achor, exhibits the authenticity of a man with plenty of stories, and maybe a few regrets. As Cece Sherman contributes some backing vocals to “We Drove All Night,” you can almost feel those long nights in the van.
