Download: Doom & Gloom, ‘Jenny’

If the stars would have aligned, Castledoor would be touring on its second album about now, building on the momentum they had back in 2007. Instead the band bade farewell early last year, its members scattering and its songs echoing (still lovingly, it should be pointed out) in the iPods of veteran Silver Lakers. As you’d expect, though, fans have not heard the last of frontman Nate Cole’s soaring vocals. Cole and his lifemate/bandmate Liska have relocated to Brooklyn and released a song each of the past three months as Doom & Gloom. [In other news involving eastern migration of SoCal bands, We Barbarians are stationed in New York working on new music, as are Matt Beighley and Jacqueline Santillan of Wait. Think. Fast.] The Coles’ bedroom recordings are strikingly beautiful, understated pop songs that find Nate’s singing a little more restrained but no less heart-rending. Make room in your iPod.
