Ears Wide Open: The Spires

Ventura three-piece the Spires rarely veer from the Anglophile superhighway that seems to run right past Buzz Bands headquarters. Comparisons to Felt, the Velvet Underground, Robyn Hitchock and the Flying Nun catalog all apply, and on the forthcoming “Curved Space” – their fourth EP to go along with two full-lengths (including last year’s very good “A Way of Seeing”) – singer-guitarist Jason Bays, drummer Colleen Coffey and bassist Catelyn Kindred have the motor running smoothly. There’s no small amount of Pacific Ocean breeze in their fuzzy jangle (or is that jangly fuzz?), and Bays sings the Spires’ colorful little sketches as if he’s not sure you’ll care. But you should.
