Ears Wide Open: Ingenue

[One in a series on new music hitting the local scene …]

ingenue

I confess that all Ingenue had to do to get my attention was boldface the influences. Singer-songwriter Lauren Dolan professes a love for the Boston power pop scene (check); “The Lolita EP” was produced by Letters to Cleo’s Michael Eisenstein (check) and features contributions from LTC singer Kay Hanley (check) and Veruca Salt’s Nina Gordon (check). So how does Dolan, a SoCal native, fare? Pretty well. Dirty guitars and their lovingly skewered lines abound, and the way Dolan belts out melodies over her rhythm section’s gnarly noise makes you ready for the ’90s to happen all over again. Except for the post-grunge bands.
