It was pretty hard to deny Real Estate‘s 2011 album, so when they announce a follow-up two years later it’s difficult to not want to go back and spin the breezy “Days.” The only thing is, their new single “Talking Backwards” from their third album “Atlas” will trump any urge to spin old songs. Rich, soft and warm, “Talking Backwards” is one of Real Estate’s most sophisticated songs yet. The jangle-pop elements usurp any typical surf-rock here, which might entice some dream-pop fans. Real Estate not only added members drummer Jackson Pollis and keyboard player Matt Kallman since their debut, but they recorded the album at Wilco’s Chicago studio The Loft. Recording there may have polished some of Real Estate’s lo-fi edges, but it’s nice to hear the intricacies clearly. “Atlas” is slated for a March 4 release via Domino. Guitar-pop on.
