The dynamic duo of modern-funk ambassador Dâm-Funk and G-funk godfather Snoopzilla, née Snoop Dogg, have teamed for a new project entitled 7 Days of Funk, with a self-titled EP out on Dec. 10 via Stones Throw Records. Snoop’s newest moniker, following his reggae turn as Snoop Lion, is drawn in reverence to Parliament-Funkadelic’s bass player Bootsy Collins, whose long-time nickname has been “Bootzilla.” After a chance meeting two years ago, Snoop asked Dâm (real name: Damon Riddick) to perform with him at 2011’s SXSW showcase, and their collaboration was born out of a shared love of funk. The first track to emerge is “Faden Away,” a nearly six-minute groove seeped in rich, West Coast funk textures with old-school synth, keys, and a bobbing bassline, that sounds retro enough to have been released decades ago. Snoop’s delivery is in his signature laid-back flow, but flirting with more of an R&B edge, gently singing his own hooks. It’s just as funky as you’d imagine it to be. The EP will also feature guest spots from Daz Dillinger, Kurupt and Steve Arrington.
