Singer-songwriter Holly Conlan is in most ways exemplary of the Hotel Café scene (although 10 years on now, maybe we should be calling it a “legacy”). She writes bright pop songs that are as smart lyrically as they are nimble melodically – the latter quality, like many of her peers, helping her tunes find their way into movies and television shows (“90210,” “One Tree Hill,” “The Ghost Whisperer,” et al). Conlan’s new full-length, a fan-funded affair titled “The Sirens,” follows 2009’s big-sounding “Fascinator.” Director Al Sgro’s video features the songstress along with actor David Anders (“Vampire Diaries,” “Once Upon A Time” and “Heroes, among others), who takes a while to find his game. Most surprising: The skronky breakdown, which could go on for about five more minutes as far as we’re concerned. Remix anyone?
