Ears Wide Open: The Futures League

At any given moment, the Futures League can sound like the noisy kids practicing in their garage next door or the ruffians who just pulled into a Southern roadhouse to take over the stage. That L.A. quartet of singer-guitarist Jon Arman, drummer John Fontana, guitarist Jack Rose and bassist Scott Ruth displayed a rootsy take on psych-rock on their self-titled EP, which they released last November. Their further adventures see them recording with all-around talent Gus Seyffert (of Willoughby), the producer, Sargent Records impresario and touring bassist for the likes of the Black Keys and Norah Jones. Judging from the groove of their new single “Too Many Lies,” it sounds like the Futures League has found some truth.
