Bands that play hide-and-seek with their identities usually have past lives or other lives that god-forbid-we-should-know-about. So it is with ¿Special Guest?, the Los Angeles trio that fell together in a moment of synchronicity when they were assembled to form a backing band. It turns out that the players – Jeff Greenfield, Drew Behj and Jon Tolman, all veterans of other L.A. acts – found a creative spark that led them down a path toward minimalist pop. Their glitchy-cool first single “Full-Time Intellectual,” Greenfield explains, “is about a struggle we all face, the seemingly endless search for our individual roles in life.” Maybe they’ve found a new one. The is working on a five-song EP they hope to release this summer.
