Sandra Vu has been fronting her own band long before she started drumming for Dum Dum Girls, but with the busy touring schedule of the latter, her band SISU just hasn’t had much time to release their own material. But it looks like the follow-up to their EP, “Light Eyes,” the band – Vu, Ryan Wood, Nat Keefer, Jules Medeiros, Dave South, Tito Echevarria and Chris Stevens – will finally see the light of day, and our first taste from the record doesn’t exactly mirror the hazy psychedelia-filled shoegaze in “Two Thousand Hands.” Within the first few seconds, SISU’s new single “Return the Favor” is obviously a post-punk track that pummels with its synth lines and heavy guitars. Its sinister twist and turns (along with Vu’s imploring vocals) demand a listener to comply. If it takes urgency for the band to avoid being pigeonholed, one can’t really argue with that when it involves a pleasant sonic shift. SISU’s debut full-length “Blood Tears” is slated for a Sept. 17 release via Mono Prism.
