For almost a decade, Jason LaRocca rocked out as frontman of L.A. punk quartet the Briggs, who made four full-lengths, two on SideOneDummy Records, and were responsible for the Los Angeles Kings anthem “This Is L.A.” Since the Briggs went on hiatus a couple years ago, LaRocca has become a studio guy, recording, mixing and producing and working in film and TV music. Inspired by Beck’s Record Club, LaRocca is exploring some of the music that informed him as a listener by covering some choice nuggets. His first effort was to embrace Neutral Milk Hotel’s “King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1,” which, in our humble opinion, offers two of the finest minutes in pop music. Turns out it makes a fantastic synth-pop song too.
