“Tiger’s Remorse,” the B-side of the new single from Youth Code, serves as a perfect introduction to the L.A. duo, because achieves so many of the sonic contradictions sought after by Ryan William George and Sara Taylor. The track’s writhing vocals from captivating, gritty glamour queen Sara Taylor are suffocated by mechanical groans and abnormally precise beats, reminiscent of “Pretty Hate Machine”-era Nine Inch Nails. “Tiger’s Remorse” (which, with “Falling Apart” has already sold out of its initial vinyl run) initially overwhelms with aggression, helping the track masquerade as something harder, when in reality flashes of dancefloor glitz are buried beneath those industrial wails. Their synths sound a bit harder than recent stuff from Gesaffelstein, and can go from ice-cold to razor-sharp instantly, further confusing a track already in the throes of an identity crisis. Youth Code performs live using all hardware, and they’ll tour this fall after the release of their first full-length via Dais Records.
