Ears Wide Open: Ten Brutes

As the frontman of the Broken Remotes, singer-guitarist Jonathan Leahy did indie-rock really well –  the 2009 single “Boxer’s Arm” still inspires a rush of blood after these many years (and it’s easy to imagine the band’s 2006 album punked-out for today’s garage scene). These days, Leahy is opening up a different vein as Ten Brutes. His first three songs in this guise boast a bluesy swagger and clenched-teeth fury, not quite exploding but not far from conflagration. Leahy’s musical mood swing is most enlightening on the single “Canyon Girl,” which in 2010 surfaced as a Broken Remotes B-side.
